We have had a lot of conversations these last few weeks trying to distinguish how we can make an impact. As two white women, we want to add our voices to the Black Lives Matter movement without overshadowing the voices that NEED to be heard and understood. How can we be a part of the change and make it last? How can our small business show our support, but also not be profiteers of current events? Also, as we get ready to launch our next quarterly partnerships that we have been working on for months, how do we time all of this in the right way for our partners?
Well, we’ve come up with a plan. We don’t know that it’s perfect, but we are committed to showing up for our community and trying again and again—that’s the only way we can change the world. This shirt was inspired by love, emotion, hurt, and hope for a better world for our black and brown friends. As allies, we are here to listen and learn. We are here to speak up for you and we are going to show up for you every damn day.
Our next nonprofit partner is @PromisingPages. Promising Pages is on the front lines, working to get books into the hands of children. Of all the children’s books published in 2018, most main characters were white (50%), followed by animals (27%). Only 10% were Black; not even 5% were Latino. It’s really hard to find books that have representations of BIPOC (Black Persons of Color) and as Marion Wright Edelman said, “You can’t be what you can’t see.”
For every Wake Up. Speak Up. Show Up. Change the World. T that we sell, we will use the proceeds to buy a children’s book written by an author who is a BIPOC with a main character who is a BIPOC and we will donate that book to Promising Pages.
To speed up our fulfillment times during COVID, this shirt will be pre-order only, and we will be taking orders through Saturday, June 20th. Orders will be shipped the week of Monday June 29th.
